ON THE ROUTE
-
visit to the cattle farm at Anetjärvi
-
On the way to Posio, possible to visit a reindeer farn "Valkean
peuran valtakunta" http://www.paliskunnat.fi/poromatkailu/valkeanpeuranvaltakunta/startter.htm
They should be able to show everything about this animal, but it
is not the only chance to meet them during our trip.
- Posio: PENTIK pottery with the factory shop. Hopefully open on Sundays
in wintertime. http://www.pentik.com/
-
Invitation to visit and have a cup of coffee at Peräposio with
Olli Moisio, a local artist and ex-2CV driver. Find a few 2CV:s at:http://www.ollimoisio.com/Otsikko.htm.
Instructions to find: In Posio and direction Rovaniemi about 25 km,
turn right "Lamminvaara" 1,5 km and right up a hill and you
are at Olli´s house. Possibility to see his paintings and lifestyle.
- Crossing the Arctic Circle near Mount "Suomutunturi", another
important ski resort http://www.suomutunturi.fi/
- ...or if we take the Western route to visit Auttiköngäs
(Autti rapids), an impressive natural sight. The place is located along
road 81 just a little before the turn to North on road 944; then we
would cross the Arctic Circle after Luusua where Raid Mosquito stayed
in 2007.
- Route option Anetjärvi-Ranua-Rovaniemi... if you want to visit
the well-known wildlife park and zoo at Ranua (http://www.ranuawildlife.fi)
and see Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, but this is also possible
on our way down. See 29.1. for details.
- Sodankylä, coffee stop and short visit to Meteorological observatory
guided by Osmo Aulamo. http://fmiarc.fmi.fi/
- read the current temperature and snow depht. The observatory is
on the east side of river Kitinen about 7 km south from Sodankylä.
Easiest to start from the village centre and follow signs for Kemijärvi
(also a small airport symbol there). After about 6 km turn right to
"Tähtelä".
- Sodankylä is also a good place for some shopping, probably some
shops are open. http://www.sodankyla.fi/
- Levi, Finland´s biggest ski resort. Visiting the camp of Raid
Mosquito in wintertime. http://www.levi.fi/
- Acoffee and souvenir stop at "Sompion Lahja ja Koru" at
Vuotso. Arriving in Vuotso on road 4, you'll cross a canal bridge and
the place is soon on your lef-hand side (after the petrol station).
You will see a house painted in Sami flag colours. Unique items there
like jewellery made of reindeer nails - genuine Lapp souvenirs made
by the owher herself.
- "Tankavaara" which is known of gold digging traditions.
Gold digging museum.
- Do you have more tips?
ACCOMMODATION AT:
"Hirvaspirtti", Saariselkä. This is
the private leisure cottage of Finnish road police which we can exceptionally
rent . It is situated next to Urho Kekkonen National Park at a beautiful
peaceful location separated from the touristic centre of the ski resort.
The cost of the cottage will be divided with the participants so it
is too early to tell, but will be a fair price. Some floor accommodation
may be needed to be taken in use.
"Hirvaspirtti" is situated between Saariselkä and Laanila). On road 4 after passing Hotel "Laanihovi" turn right from the first crossing (the road is called "Viskitie"). When you come to a t-crossing, turn right ("Laanilantie") and after the bridge a steep turn to left and this road will take you to Hirvaspirtti. See the more detailed map below.
