We
recommend a coffee and souvenir stop at "Sompion
Lahja ja Koru" at Vuotso. Arriving in Vuotso on road 4, you'll cross
a canal bridge and the place is soon on your lef-hand side (after the petrol
station). You will see a house painted in Sami flag colours. You can get some
unique items there like jewellery made of reindeer nails. There is also other
genuine Lapp souvenirs made by the owher herself.
On our way up we will also pass "Tankavaara" which is known of gold digging traditions. They for example have an interesting Gold digging museum.
With some help from a friendly 2CV club member living in Lapland, we could arrange a nice overnight spot for Raid Mosquito at SAARISELKÄ. We are renting a big and a bit luxorious loghouse of the "Finnish Road Police" for our group. It is a 350 m2 cottage at a beautiful natural private spot next to river Luttojoki. There should be space for camping and also the house offers 8 rooms and two larger sitting areas. There are saunas and other basic things, of course. It is again not a regular camping place, so flexibility is needed so that everyone finds a nice spot for the tent and car. Some people can sleep indoors aswell. Bad news is this area has been practically mosquito free the last few years.
OVERNIGHT at "Hirvaspirtti" in Saariselkä (between Saariselkä and Laanila).
LOCATION: On road 4 after passing Hotel "Laanihovi" turn right from the first crossing (the road is called "Viskitie"). When you come to a t-crossing, turn right ("Laanilantie") and after the bridge a steep turn to left and this road will take you to Hirvaspirtti. See the more detailed map below.
