Day 12 ... Saariselkä - Inari - Levi 250 km (option: Kautokeino, Norway)
We
plan to drive via Inari to see some specific
places there. SIIDA –
the Sámi museum, Inari
is a must for all raiders to learn everything about the Arctic areas and the
Lapp culture. They have interesting exhibitions both indoors and outdoors. We
plan to arrange a guided tour there.
If you want to make a longer trip, you could drive to Kautokeino (Norway)which is know of its silver smiths.
LEVI is Finland's largest ski center in wintertime, but also quite nice in summertime and they are working hard to improve the summer tourism there.
The Finnish 2CV Guild has had negotiations with Levi about arranging the 20th World Meeting of 2CV Friends there in 2013. Now you will have a look what this area could offer.
Notice:
NEW OVERNIGHT SPOT AT LEVI. They are starting construction works near our earlier
camping area and therefore it would be better to stay at the top of Levi next
to restaurant "Tuikku".
Advantages: Very exotic place above the tree zone. More flat camping on grass.
More midnight sun.
Disadvantages: No sauna or showers at site, but WC. Showers can be reached with
a 10 min gondola lift ride to the lower station (free of charge, running until
19:00). Can be windy > no mosquitos. In really bad weather we could camp
at the ground level. Meals and breakfast at "Tuikku" as ordered. A
nice panorama restaurant.
Levi offers also a swimming hall/spa in the central village, more info later.
The spot should give a nice view over the surroundings and a possibility to see the midnight sun again even if it is actually setting for a short time at the grould level.
LOCATION:
Arriving from the North you come to the Levi central village (Sirkka) with a
roundabout. Drive on 2 km to the South direction "Kittilä". Just
before a Neste petrol station, turn left following a sign "Näköalaravintola
Tuikku". You will climb steep uphill until you see “Tuikku”
as the only building on your left-hand side. Camping nearby; not a regular camping
place, but reserved especially for our group. Toilet in the restaurant building
