We are planning for example a gold digging trip. This could easily take half a day, but it should be worth doing as this is the genuine Lapp gold area. More information later.
In
Saariselkä you can visit SIULA
– the information and shopping centre, Saariselkä
Here you can buy Lappish handicrafts, music and other souvenirs. Especially
check the exhibition “Destination Northernmost Europe” with a wonderful
multimedia show on the 2nd floor.
Other
places worth visiting: the top of mount "Kaunispää" (ski
center in wintertime). "Kutturan kultakioski".
Option: North Cape:
As we are booking the "Police office camp" for two nights, the people wanting to go to the North Cape on their own, can play a little with the dates. It is about 1000 km extra and you probably need one additional overnight somewhere in Norway. You can cut either the second night at Saariselkä or the first night at Levi.
The trip to North Cape is not included in the official Route Plan of the raid, but if you want to go there it is possible. It is basicly a lot of driving in breathtaking scenery in Norway. For going on the island you need to take a tunnel and pay its toll twice. Also there is a inevitable high parking fee at the actual North Cape area. For more information, see http://www.northcape.no/
We will need to know in advance if you do the North Cape expedition to make correct bookings at Saariselka and Levi.
